Curo Salus provides safe, therapeutic, caring environments for children who have attachment problems, due to adverse circumstances and emotional trauma in their early years.
Our model of practice is based on attachment theory. The therapeutic aim of Curo Salus is to help children regain appropriate trust in adults and to develop integrated relationships with adults and other children.
The therapeutic milieu will create opportunities for growth and development, because of the predictable nature of the environment, the highly structured day, the therapeutic programmes and the high level of competence and expertise of the staff.
The goal for some of the children will be a sucessful foster placement. Curo Salus will use their expertise to prepare each child for a family placement. At the point of entry, each child will be assessed by Curo Salus, in order to plan an effective intervention plan and education programme.
Curo Salus provides therapeutic environments where children learn fun & satisfaction which is inherent in healthy relationships with adults. The therapeutic approaches used will be
determined by the needs of the child.
We create a living environment in which every interaction a child has is an opportunity for change each interaction should be a positive emotional experience for the child. Children who do not trust adults to care for them are shown, through the daily living routine, that possibly for the first time in their lives, the adults will take care of them.
Each child will be offered the opportunity to explore their life story, under the supervision of our psychology team. This will give the child the opportunity to understand and reframe some of the events in their early life, and to acknowledge their feelings about experiences.
Life story work helps a child make sense of their past & build into their present, so that the past does not dominate, control or inhibit the present.
Initially teaching will be provided by Curo Salus at Northview House School until such time as the child is ready to be integrated into mainstream. Northview House School is registered by the Registrar for Independent Schools as a through school i.e. catering for both primary & secondary pupils.
The school is at Johnstone, with an Annex in Kilbarchan. We aim to provide a nurturing learning environment in which each child feels safe to trust that adults will take of them. We encourage the children to try new behaviours that will allow them to succeed in a learning environment.
The Nurturing Classroom has the process of attachment as its main focus. The child is helped to understand that when they enter the classroom the trust of care is transferred from the child care to the education staff. Teaching is provided by trained teachers, supported by teaching assistants.
Gradual inclusion into local schools supported by Curo Salus staff may be appropriate for some children if & when a child is ready to transfer to a mainstream school, such a step will be carefully planned in discussion with the receiving school and the placing authority, as part of the Care Planning process.
